Marks of Ministry

From Ministerial Excellence, Support & Authorization (MESA)

Marks of Faithful and Effective Authorized Ministers

Marks of Faithful and Vital Local Churches in the UCC

Marks of Faithful and Vital Local Churches in the UCC

The Marks of Faithful and Effective Authorized Ministers is a tool for discernment and assessment, created especially for use by Members in Discernment, Committees on Ministry, and authorized ministers.

The Marks is not a checklist or report card, in which one strives to receive a perfect grade in every category. Rather, the Marks provides a lens for reflecting upon a person’s formation, gifts and growth both before authorization and throughout one’s ministry.

The Marks of Faithful and Vital Local Churches (DRAFT) is a tool for discernment and assessment created especially for use by local churches, Committees on Ministry, and authorized minister. Marks strive to describe the combination of practices, attitudes, and attributes that foster vitality in faith communities in the UCC.  These are intended to be aspirational, developmental resources for local churches to assess where they are and where they want to grow. No church has all of these Marks, all churches have some of these Marks, and their unique personality, gifts, and callings are ideally reflected in these Marks.
